The sun was dazzling in the cloudless blue sky, so I covered my eyes with my hand.

Looking at the crushed blisters and tattered palm in front of me, I unconsciously clenched my fist.

…I didn’t receive any Skills again.

Feeling the slight taste of blood spreading in my mouth, I thought back to today’s training. The barrage of spear strikes father showed me, the lightning-clad spear, and the blow with the hilt, which was probably a type of stick technique. How is it that no matter how much I mimic and swing my spear, I can’t gain any Skills by preventing them?

Father and Grandfather told me I would eventually gain one if I continued to train, and the others would quickly come after the first. He says it will be. Although Sebas, Moldo, and Meryl also told me that I just couldn’t learn them because I was still young, was that really the case?

Am I the only one who thinks it’s a stretch to say I’m too young when I was about to greet my tenth birthday?

If I couldn’t get a single skill after all this swinging, maybe I’ m–

“——chan. –le-chan…Doyle-chan!”

“Mother?”

Suddenly my shoulders were shaken, and when I came back from the whirlwind of thoughts, I saw mother peering at me with concern. Apparently, I was so lost in thought that I hadn’t heard Mother’s voice at all.

When I called out for Mother her expression got more anxious and, as I tried to stand up, she put her hands on my back and asked worried,

“Doyle-chan, what’s wrong? Does it still hurt somewhere?”

“No, No, I’m fine. I don’t have any pain anywhere.”

“Really? You don’t have to push yourself just because we have guests coming over, you know?”

“I’m fine. I was just lost in thought for a minute; that’s why I was slow to react.”

“Lost in thought? What’s bothering you?”

As I thought where Father had gone, when Mother was here anxiously waking me, I saw he had at some point stuck up a conversation with Moldo, who came to pick us up.

Deciding it’s impossible to ask for help from Father, who seemed to listen to some kind of report, I looked at my mother.

I wondered how I should answer her, as she was clearly waiting for me to confide my thoughts with an expression that said, “Talk to me about anything.”

I’m sure that if I told my mother that I had been having trouble learning Skills, she would comfort me by telling me that it was okay.

But right now, it was hard for me to hear those words.

I know very well that mother genuinely believes in me says those words with only that in mind, but that phrase, with no basis backing it up, only served to build-up more frustration.

And when this uncomfortable leavened emotion overflows, I was sure that I would throw terrible words at Mother.

“Well, it’s no big deal. I’m hungry, and I was just thinking about what I’d like for lunch.”

“Oh, dear. Then I’ll have to get back and change quickly.”

Mother, who had been quietly waiting for me to speak, smiled cheerfully at my words of hunger and made me stand up, then began to clean up the cloths and water jugs on the ground.

Mom, who has spent time at the church since she was a child, may not be familiar with charms for children and other common sense, but she is surprisingly good at tidying up and doing the laundry.

After cleaning up in a flash, Mother nodded with a satisfied look on her face as she packed everything into a large basket and called out to father and Mordo.

It seemed their talk had just finished, too, as they immediately turned their feet toward us. Seeing Mother struggling with the luggage, I took it from her.

“I’ll take it.”

“Ma~. Thank you, Doyle-chan.”

When I took the package away from Mother’s hand a little too forcefully, she looked surprised for a moment but smiled softly the next.

“You’re so sweet, Doyle-chan,”

“It’s only natural for a man to carry the baggage, Mother.”

“And so handsome.”

Mother giggled and patted my head. To get away from her ticklish hand, I walked a bit faster but looked back after only a few steps.

“Mother. Father and Mordo are waiting for you.”

“I’m coming.”

When I called out to my mother, wondering if I had hurt her by deliberately avoiding her hand, she didn’t seem bothered at all but rather smiled happily.

“I’m sure Doyle-chan will be a great hero. Stronger and more manly than Alan.”

With a quick wink, Mother said, “Shall we go?” and pushed my back.

At those words and Mother’s smile without any falsehood, I felt the stagnation pile up again.

“Serena! Doyle! We have to get going!”

“Yes~.”

My mother replied happily to Father with a smile, and I walked while being pushed on the back by her, hiding my face behind the basket, so she wouldn’t see.

Feeling the temperature of Mother’s palm gently pushing my back, I bit my lip.

With less than a few dozen meters between Father and us, I breathed shallowly to erase my expression, and the strength I unconsciously put into my face slowly dissipated.

When I took one last deep breath, the basket that had been hiding my face suddenly disappeared from my hands.

“Good work. Was it heavy, Doyle?.”

“I’m okay with this much.”

“I see.”

I smiled at my father, as he patted my head while handing the basket to Mordo.

Seeing me like that, Father started walking with Mother next to him, and Mordo diagonally behind her. I quickly followed them, too.

As I walked after my parents, who seemed to be enjoying themselves as they talked about their guests who seemed to have already arrived, the words of my mother from earlier went round and round in my head.

“I’m sure Doyle-chan will be stronger and more manly than Alan. You’ll be a wonderful hero.”

“Is it really possible for me to become a [Spear Hero], Mother?”

I asked my mother in my mind as I followed my parents’ back, who were much bigger than me.
